The Dodgers fielded Mookie Betts (right fielder), Freddie Freeman (first baseman), Will Smith (catcher), Max Muncy (third baseman), JD Martinez (designated hitter), David Peralta (left fielder), Miguel Vargas (second baseman), Chris Taylor (shortstop), James Outman (centre fielder) and starting pitcher Bobby Miller.
The Yankees, on the other hand, kept captain Judge out of the lineup. He injured his right big toe when he threw himself into the fence during the last game. Glavier Torres (second base), Anthony Rizzo (first base), Giancarlo Stanton (designated hitter), Willie Calhoun (left field), DJ LeMahieu (third base), Jake Bauers (right field), Isaiah Kaino Palepa (centre field), Kyle Higashioka (catcher), Anthony Volpi (shortstop) and starting pitcher Domingo Hermann.
It was a pitcher’s duel for the first half of the game. Miller, the Dodgers starter, was working a no-hitter until he was hit by Volpi with two outs in the top of the fifth. He allowed just three hits, including two walks and an error by third baseman Muncy.
Yankees starter Herrmann was no slouch either. Other than giving up a double to Peralta with two outs in the second inning, a single to Vargas with two outs in the fifth, and a walk to Outman with one out in the sixth, he shut down the opposition.
With the scoreboard reading zeroes, it was the Yankees who broke the streak. The Dodgers took the lead in the top of the seventh. Reliever Bruce Graterol ran into trouble after giving up a single to left to Bowers and then an infield single to Kainer Palepa.
Graterol made a throwing error when he picked up the ball and threw to first base, allowing the runners to advance to second and third. He then gave up a grounder to Higashioka that allowed the runners to score from third.
The Dodgers quickly turned the tide. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Martinez hit a Hermann curveball for a solo shot over the left field fence to tie the game at 1-1.
The Dodgers were shaken after starter Miller went down. Reliever Evan Phillips couldn’t stop the Yankees bats either. With one out in the top of the eighth, he gave up a walk to Rizzo and a double to Stanton to put runners on first and third. Then, pinch-hitter Oswaldo Cabrera’s grounder to first was caught by Freeman, who couldn’t throw home, allowing the runner to score from third to make it 1-2.
Later in the game, the Dodgers took a knee. With two outs in the top of the ninth, Caleb Ferguson gave up a two-run homer to Volpi to make it 4-1.
For the Dodgers, Miller pitched six innings of one-hit ball with two walks and seven strikeouts. He was followed by shaky relief pitching from Graterol (1 run in 1 inning), Phillips (1 run in 1 inning) and Ferguson (2 runs in 1 inning).
On the other side of the ball, Yankees starter Herrmann went 6⅔ innings, allowing four hits (one homer) and one run with six strikeouts. At the plate, Volpi sparked the offence with two multi-hit games, including a wedge.
